It doesn't have to be expensive or difficult to get a bunch of folks together
to walk and roll! Modern life has its advantages, since it is easy
to post notices online. People have found each other
using their local Craigslist or a similar site.
What is a Walk and Roll Club? Just a goofy name for a bunch of people
who like to walk, jog, run, bike, skate, skateboard, ride scooters, or wheelchair ride for
fitness and a good time. The idea is to be flexible. Maybe there are
5 people who can get together on Saturday mornings, but one person shows up with
a bike and three want to walk and one wants to rollerblade. If you have a
paved route (a bike path is best), just decide on a time interval (say, 40
minutes), and have everyone turn back (wherever they are) at 20 minutes.
You all start and end together. Then you can all go to take a hot tub (yeah,
right, this is California thinking . . )!
The other option is for everyone to do the same thing together, but to
alternate among the different sports, so you don't get bored. Maybe you
like several of these sports but get in a rut with your routine; this way you
have some peer pressure to try something different. Or maybe you haven't
yet tried a sport but would be willing to in a group of supportive friends.
A Walk and Roll Club's purpose is to give you a regular time (however often
you choose to get together) to be out there moving, and a group of supportive
friends who will keep it fun and interesting.
A Walk and Roll Club for larger people has the added purpose of providing a
pace that's appropriate for larger bodies, and also the psychological support of
being with other large folks who know from personal experience about the
prejudice in this culture. Make sure you read the page on Fitness
